To control grassy and broadleaf weeds.  Weeds are annuals, biannual and perennials as well as cool season and warm season.  Different types of grass are susceptible to different types of weeds.  The process can be arduous, but with the right treatment a lot can be achieved.  Not even the near perfect lawn is 100% weed free.
